Historical notes of the village.
The city of Assisi is known for being the home of Saint Francis and St. Clare. For this reason, after the finding of their bodies, in 1818 and 1850, Assisi became a privileged destination for pilgrimages; religious tourism has given a strong increase in the revival of the local economy.

The history of Assisi

During the Second World War, in the period after 8 September 1943 and the German occupation, Assisi is literally overrun by refugees, among which more than 300 Jews. Bishop Mons. Giuseppe Placido Nicolini transforms Assisi into one of the main centres of Italian civil resistance to the Holocaust. Disguised as friars and nuns, hidden in the dungeons and cellars, camouflaged among the displaced, provided with false documents, the Jews refugees in Assisi are protected by a vast network of solidarity that also extends to other areas of Umbria and has contacts, also through the cyclist Gino Barti, with the power and financing plants of the Delasem in Liguria and Tuscany. The task is arduous. Among the refugees there are women, children, old, sick, who need care and assistance for daily needs. Even a school is organized where Jewish children can receive Jewish religious education. Thanks also to the complicity of the German Colonel Valentin Müller, who will declare Assisi a free zone, no Jew is deported from Assisi.

The two sides come back to challenge each other in our days in an intense but courteous contest in which they sing and act. The parts represent the two territorial units, which evoke the territories of the Fiumi and the Nepis, in which is ideally divided the city.
